About Gayla
Iowa has a heritage steeped in the mysteries of nature. Less than two hundred
years ago, it was unspoiled grassland, prairie and forest. Iowa native Gayla
Drake absorbed the mystery of this land, and has spent a lifetime translating
mystery into music. Her music evokes the lay of the land from the gentle rolling
hills to the cliffs and crags of the many river valleys.
Two life-long obsessions intertwine in her artistry: she fell utterly,
irrevocably in love with the guitar at the age of 3, and began playing at the
age of 4; she learned to read at 2, to write at 3, began writing stories almost
instantly, and was writing songs by the time she was 8. These two passions blend
seamlessly into music that sometimes seems like it is breathed out through her
pores rather than played on any instrument.
One of a handful of guitarists to master both fingerstyle and flatpicking guitar
techniques in multiple genres and tunings, she is rarer still for her remarkable
singing voice, prolific songwriting and compositional skills. Her
larger-than-life, force-of-nature performance style combines with her wicked
sense of humor to engage, enrapture and astound audiences.
Gayla is also highly in demand as a sideman, playing fiddle or guitar in several
bands and duos, and fronts two remarkably different ensembles, the Gayla Drake
Trio, and Aunt G and the Stone City Nephews, both featuring her original songs
in unique and powerful arrangements.
